Description
Despite the fact that the history of the Ragdoll is not only colorful, but also seems completely unbelievable, this wonderful breed is one of the most popular breeds. In the family of cat breeds, the Ragdoll is one of the youngest siblings.
I would like to draw attention to one of the most important points, that the Ragdoll is a pointed breed, i.e. blue-eyed, that is why all pointed cats can only and exclusively have blue eyes, this is a basic genetic law. Its pattern is pointed, so it must not be monochromatic, e.g. black or white, its color must not be non-contrasting, it must not have green eyes, it must not be solid, mink, sepia or other categories. Many people emphasize that these are also Ragdolls, and what's more, they are rare and unique. Knowing this, however, it is clear that they do not even meet the basic category expectations, if we examine them from this point of view.
However, in recent years solid, mink, sepia and solid ragdoll cats have been accepted as purebred ragdolls by some cat associations. This is also the case with The International Cat Association (TICA), which issues official papers for solid, mink, sepia and plain Ragdolls, declaring that they are purebred, without any restrictions or discrimination. Rare Ragdoll breeders argue that when Ann Baker developed the breed in the 1960s, she rejected those that differed from the traditional Ragdoll color, preferring pointed types, which became the Ragdoll breed standard, but continued to breed colors she did not want, so maintaining the uniqueness characteristic of the breed.
Even so, on the website of the Ragdoll Fanciers Club International (RFCI), it says about solid, mink, sepia and solid ragdoll cats; "It is important to note that these experimental (variant) Ragdolls have not been accepted by any major association (cannot be registered as standard) and do not conform to the current written breed standard, which lists the Ragdoll as a blue-eyed, point breed. The essence of the "rare" designation seen in advertisements is that the written Ragdoll breed standard does not accept them, so the majority of breeders do not include them in their breeding program.
Healt
Lifespan: 7-12 years.
Diseases of genetic origin can occur in both purebred and mixed cats.
The following diseases can occur in Ragdolls:
- Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a heart disease that occurs in this breed, but its genetic origin has not yet been proven. A DNA test is available, which can be used to determine whether the cat carries a predisposition to the disease.
- Urinary stones, cystitis
- I am prone to FIP
Personaliti
Unlike many cats, the Ragdoll loves to be picked up, held and nursed. He also doesn't mind being turned onto his back and having his belly stroked. This is a true characteristic of his personality. The Ragdoll loves its owners, welcomes the family at the door, and can follow them around the house all day. Of course, as soon as he gets the chance, he immediately jumps into your lap or goes to bed.
His voice is soft and kind, you can be sure that he will use it when you need to warn the owner about feeding time or when you want to ask for a little caress. However, it cannot be called a loud cat. Overall, the Ragdoll has such characteristics that it is very easy and pleasant to live with. If you can't find your kitty, she's probably resting on the sofa or bed, but probably not higher than that. He likes to be on the level where his owners are, he does not want to be at the highest point in the room.
Appearance and grooming
The Ragdoll has moderately long hair, with minimal undercoat. This makes it less prone to tangling and shedding. Of course, this does not mean that you do not need to take care of your hair. Comb and brush it twice a week, paying special attention to the legs, including the bends, because this is where knots and felts form the most. Combing and brushing should always be done carefully and gently so as not to pull the fur. If you do, your Ragdoll will enjoy the attention.
It should be noted that seasonal changes in climate and hormonal changes affect the length of the coat. In winter, the fur coat is the longest. Sterilized Ragdolls have abundant fur all year round, thanks to the fact that hormonal changes do not affect the coat. Check the tail regularly for faeces and clean the fur if necessary. You don't need to bathe too often, only when necessary. In time, this can mean a few weeks, but also a few months. If the coat looks dirty or smells bad, bathe the cat.
Ragdolls are characterized by their large size, patterned fur and wonderful blue eyes. This breed is one of the largest domestic cats, the weight of Kandurs can even exceed 9-10 kilos. The body color is paler, the face is darker, as are the fur on the legs, tail and ears. Brown, chocolate brown, blue or purple single-color, praclis or two-color versions are known.
The Ragdoll reaches its final size at the age of 3-4, at which time the coat also develops.
According to the breed standard, the head of the Ragdoll is large and wide, and its shape is modified wedge-shaped. All sides of the head are the same length, the muzzle is slightly round. The color of the eyes is bright blue, their shape is oval. The medium-sized ears are rounded at the end, and the ears are slightly forward. The neck is strong, the body is elongated, strong, heavy, and the bones are strong. The massive forelegs are moderately long, the hind legs slightly longer than the forelegs. The large and round paws are richly covered with fur, the long tail is also heavily furred.
The Ragdoll's silky coat is moderately long. There is a collar of short fur on the face, then longer fur around the neck. It is shorter again at the shoulders, and from here it gradually gets longer towards the tail, which is richly covered with fur
.Movement
Since it is a calm breed, interactive games are very important, so it is easy to provide the necessary exercise to avoid obesity. It is worth including the joint playing time in the program on a daily basis.
Education
Perhaps the breed can be described well with the word obedient, but this does not mean that Ragdolls are inactive. In fact! They love to play and are happy to participate in all family activities. With positive reinforcement - using reward bites and lots of love - they will do everything for the owner. The Ragdoll learns quickly, skillfully learns tricks, and quickly learns to use a scratching post. He easily learns to go to the owner when called, but he is not against fetching either.
The calm Ragdoll fits perfectly into family life. He rarely digs his claws into people or children while playing, and he doesn't mind playing more clumsy games, such as dressing him up in baby clothes or pushing him in a stroller. In fact, a partner in all of this! Due to its large size, which is even more determined than the Kandurs, the breed is a good choice for families with children, of course the puppy must be taught how to handle the cat first. It is especially important that you know how to properly dress this big cat. Never hold the Ragdoll with its rear half hanging in the air!
The Ragdoll gets along especially well with other cats and cat-friendly dogs, thanks to its kind nature. At the same time, always introduce the animals slowly, gradually and patiently, get them used to getting along well with each other
.Feeding
Ragdolls often develop fat deposits on the lower abdomen. Although this is acceptable, the farmer is responsible for obesity, and this must be taken care of. That is why control of food intake is very important for this breed.
